The Big Black Swatch & Shade Post

This post is in lieu of a finish to the Juvia's Place review. No need to go on beating that dead horse. In the meantime (and since even being the hermit I am, this lockdown is crazy) I thought I would do a swatch post that includes the 2 new Juvia shades.

It's nice that a lot of the established cosmetic brands are adding shades for "deeper" skin tones. New brands seem to be popping up all the time (like Juvia's Place). Still, finding an affordable and appropriate shade of foundation is tough for a lot of us. I know ladies of all races and colors who have almost as hard a time as I do in trying to find something that works with their peach- or olive-hued tones. If you can't pull off one of the basic shades - porcelain, ivory, buff, light, tan, medium, "deep", chocolate, almond, or some variation of "toast" - then you have to be the Indiana Jones of the makeup world.

These are some arm and face swatches of all the shades I have lying around. I throw nothing out so I have stuff from 4 years ago. Don't judge me!

Just so you know:
  • I photographed my leg in the natural light of my home. (ceiling and floor lamps)
  • I applied a light primer and nothing else other than the moisturizer I already had on
  • I did not apply any other powders or setting products
  • I used a makeup spatula to apply (cleaning after each use)
  • I ran a line of the Nars shade along the top so you can compare it to each of the other shades.

These are the ones taken a couple of minutes after applying all the swatches:

sorry for the bad cropping
see names and shades below

It's easy to see that the Khartoum, Ebony, Mali, and Bronze 8 shades are ones I can work best with. The others can be used, I suppose, for highlighting, contouring, and blending to lighten or darken other shades.

This is after I lay a paper towel over them and did a light blotting:

You can barely tell the Nars from my skin. Perfect.

This is after I have let the makeup rest and completely set for about 5 minutes

I tried to keep the camera the same distance away but there could be some variation. You get the idea though.

By the way, this is the wonderful primer I used. It was sent as a full-size sample (yay) from Tryspree and I will be buying more when I am finished with the jar.

If you are always on the lookout for shades in "deep" tones, here are some that I have considered. With a couple of exceptions, they are affordably priced and seem to come in a good variety of deep shades. And, since I was only looking at shades, you would have to judge for yourself how good they are as far as wear and staying power. The links are to where I found the item and not always the brand site.

I did notice that Target carries quite a range of brands with diverse shades. Also, the site has a "foundation guide" to help locate suitable brands on their site with your shade range.

Actually, once I started searching, I found quite a few brands with "deep" shade choices. You have probably heard of most, but I think at least a couple will be new for you.

Here are some with prices in the mid to higher range - depending on what your budget is. I'm too tired to do links for all of them but hit up Google.

  • Uoma Beauty (totally new to me)
  • Fenty (Rhianna's gig so I won't bother with it. Personal bias.)
  • Il Mikiage (see this a lot on social media platforms)
  • ColourPop (I've seen this on Influenster)
  • Black Up (I had one of their foundations in a near-matching shade for my skin. Good foundation as long as you get a match.)
  • Urban Decay
  • Nars (of course)
  • Becca
  • Marc Jacobs (who knew?)
  • Lancome (love theirs but it's pricey for me at around $45)
  • Hue Noir (another totally new one for me)
  • MAC
  • Makeup Forever
  • Black Radiance (of course)
  • Flori Roberts (I used to love their Gold perfume but it's no longer made)
The name of the last one I want to mention gives me the creeps but I love that they seem to have a wide range of shades. It's called Flesh Beauty. See what I mean? Anyway... The prices are mid-range ($32 for a foundation) but they offer free shipping. If you sign up for their mailing list, you get a discount on your first order.

Believe it or not, there are more I could have listed but I got tired.

Hope this helped.

**REVIEW** E.L.F. Cream Contour Palette

Let me start by admitting that I don't use contouring in my makeup routine. I don't even have what you'd call a makeup 'routine'. I just like a little foundation, eyeliner and maybe a touch of lip color. If  I'm feeling wild and crazy, I will use some eyeshadow.

I wanted this palette because I do sometimes need help with my eye area. I notice that having a creamy base helps my eyeliner go on better, The under-eye area looks better when I hide the fine lines.

So... I like having a palette. Most don't have shades that compliment my deep-dark skin tone. This one does. And it's cheap. I got mine from - where else? - Amazon.

Usually, I try to use cosmetics by Black Radiance because they have my shades down pat. B.R. had a similar palette but it was more expensive and had only 1 choice of the deepest shade. I can use every one of these - though I'm not crazy about that Ivory shade up on the left...

I like this one. It is super creamy and smooth. I noticed that, like most inexpensive cosmetics, it can be a little greasy, but, oh well. I tried to get the contrast and sharpness just right so you could better see the arm swatch I did.

love those colors. Well, all except that chalky one up in the corner. As you can see, the darkest color (bottom on arm and bottom right in the palette) could almost work as an all-over foundation for me. That is the one I use in the under-eye area to smooth the look of fine lines.

I don't want to forget to mention that this compact comes with a mirror - one of the good ones, not the cheap lightweight or plastic ones.

What I love most about this is that I didn't have to apply foundation around this. Often, when I use any kind of color on one part of my face - eyes, cheeks - I have to use some foundation so that the added shades aren't obvious. The colors I used in this palette blended beautifully with my natural skin color. Yay.

Other than the slight sheen of sweat (it's been scorching here!), you can't really tell that I have touched up my eye area. That's a good thing.

The one thing that was odd about the palette is that it's not labeled as being Deep, Medium, or Light.  Still, I'm going to give it 5 of 5 stars.

**REVIEW** Black Radiance Ebony Powder

Hey, dark-skinned ladies! I have found another fantastic product that you might be interested in.

Black Radiance Pressed Powder Compact

Black Radiance made me so mad when they discontinued my favorite shade of liquid foundation, but they just won back my love with this product.

I don't normally use powders as my only foundation because I never could find one that complimented my skin tone. With a powder, shade matching is crucial. The wrong shade can come off looking mask-like or caked on. Plus, a poor quality powder settles into even fine lines and creases. Yikes!

Just a quick mention here: This powder is for setting your liquid foundation, I suppose, but I am my own gal and I use it as a foundation. So there.

This powder does exactly what a good powder foundation is supposed to - evens out my skin tone and softens my look - and it does it perfectly. It doesn't cake up the least bit (even in humidity), and it blends so well with my skin tone that in the mirror I don't look so much made up" as I do lightly 'filtered'. It's that softening effect that you get when you are in the right lighting.

Okay. Why do I look so mean? Let's try that one again:

I know that's kind of a fake smile, but what do you expect when it's just me and my webcam? Nah, really I was smiling because I love the look I get with this foundation. Actually, when I use this powder, I get the same effect that other women do when they use only a little bit of blotting powder. You know what I mean - something to tame the shine and fine lines.

By the way, I dug out my Black Radiance Illusions Lip Gloss - shade #3229 - for my little photo shoot. Glad I did. Forgot how much I like it.

"Diva Desire" is the shade name. I think.
Whatever. Bet it's discontinued.

The powder is very light and doesn't feel as if it's smothering my skin. I also love that it doesn't "transfer" easily, messing up my hands and clothing.

You can't even see my jawline

This particular shade is (surprise, surprise) the same one that I loved in the now-discontinued liquid foundation I swore by. The price was reasonable, thank goodness and even more surprising, I found the product in my local Walmart. I'm not sure how long the store will carry the item since I found it as a mark down ($3) on an end cap in the cosmetics aisle. No worries though, because Amazon also carries it (though it costs around $10). Yay!

I was so happy to find this on markdown. Otherwise, I might not have tried it. (Yeah, I was still made about the discontinued foundation!)

The photo quality it not the best (sucky webcam), but you can at least tell that I don't look like I'm in clown-face. Matter of fact, I took one photo with only one side of my face made up (lipstick and all) so that you could see how subtle the effect is.

lipstick side is the made up side

The negative thing I have to say is not to do with the makeup. It's the applicator brush. Ugh! I hate those cheap little brushes for applying powder foundation. Instead, I'm using this brush that I got for free as part of a review:

Got this set free in exchange for a review

This style of applicator brush is amazing. Just perfect for applying powders although I wasn't crazy about it for applying liquid foundation...

Anyway, if any of you have seen this product and were wondering if it were any good, I can tell you that, if you find your shade, you should grab it. I'm glad I did!

Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra 24h Wear and My Insane Makeup Drama

I was temporarily insane and in desperate need of foundation when I bought this. Never fear. It's going back to the store, ASAP.

Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra 24h Wear & Comfort Retouch-free Divine Perfection Foundation - Oil-free. Fragrance-free SPF 15 (555 Suede C)

That's Lancome's foundation in the shade of 555 Suede C.

PROS:

  • Excellent texture out of the bottle
  • Matches my dark skin shade to perfection
  • Lasts through the day (and even through the night, if it has to)
  • Would probably last a while because a little bit covers well
CONS:
  • Price is ridiculous. Outrageous. ($47 at Ulta)
  • The finish is too drying when it has set
  • The price would cover a weeks' worth of my groceries, including coffee and toiletries
  • I had to add some oil to give my face a more natural look.
  • The price, the price, the price.
For someone that can afford this (and who wants a very matte finish), this is probably a perfect foundation. I had buyer's remorse even as I got my cardholder discount (paid around $30 instead of the nearly $50 tag).

So why did I get this in the first place? Typical dilemma. I was feeling blah on my way to a meeting about job prospects. The sun was out in full force (which, as you know, will highlight both the best and worse of your facial features), and I was almost out of my favorite foundation. Oh, and, I have to add this: my favorite and most perfect (and most affordable ever) foundation is no longer available anywhere except for on Ebay. Ugh.

This right here is what I have been wearing for around 5 or more years:

It matches my skin tone (and even has the slight read under shading I love). And it's only ever cost me $10 at the most. Sometimes, I've gotten it for $8.99 online. One tube would last me 6 months, even if I was using it every day (which I don't usually do). ~sigh~

I tried using a similar product from the same Black Radiance brand.

The shade is also "Ebony", but I don't know why the two shades are so completely different. This is about a shade and a half darker than the other "Ebony". The texture is also much thicker (and heavier). I guess it's supposed to be for heavier coverage. Whatever the reason, it doesn't work for me.

I'm not knocking Lancome. Matter of fact, I'm happy that a major brand bothered to have a shade in a darker color. Real happy. I just wish I didn't have to see that price tag! LOL

If  you compare all three, subtle differences are enough
Before I even headed into Ulta, I tracked down every other possibility of shades and brands online. Imagine my shock when I realized SheaMoisture offers a foundation in shades a lot of women could love...

sheamoisture sheer liquid foundation swatches
I see you down there, Madidi Mocha

I've badmouthed SheaMoisture before for their over-hyped/over-priced hair products. Never thought I'd even consider buying anything again from that brand. That makeup is the bombtastic diggity though. Unfortunately, the Anchorage Ulta doesn't carry it. I could order it online and return it to my local Ulta (which is what I am considering when I return the Lancome, pronto), but buying a foundation online is tricky when you've never used it before.

My niece turned me on to another online brand that looks promising. It's called BH Cosmetics. Looks very interesting (especially those prices!).

Liquid Foundation

Right now, the BH foundation is $4.50 (reg $9.00).

Once again, there's that problem of trying to get the right shade... This brings me to another issue with makeup companies:

Why on earth don't these brands offer realistic shade charts? I'm sure that women of every shade and hue gets frustrated by trying to match one brand to another. I did find this one site called Foundation Matrix that helps with that.

Isn't that a beautiful thing?
I need that shade 4th from the left

The only thing is, because there are so many brands and shades, you might not find yours in the mix. I give them big props for even attempting to keep their database current.

Bottom line, it is just getting too hard to obtain decent basic makeup at affordable prices. My next step is going to be learning how to make my own. Pinterest has some interesting information on that.

(You can get almost everything you need from Making Cosmetics.)

In the meantime, the hunt is still on for a foundation that I don't have to trek back to the store with for my refund :-(

UPDATE: Just a couple hours after writing this post, I made up my mind to get back to Ulta for my refund (as soon as this snow lets up). With the $30-something that I will be getting credited back to my bank, I found all this on BH Cosmetics for about the same price. That's FIVE products (2 foundations) for less than the price of a single high brand - including the shipping to Alaska. Take that, you other brands...

Notice that I got TWO of the foundations (to be sure of shades). Even if I have to return this stuff, it's going to be worth it to find what works for me. I will surely be back to do reviews on the products once they get here.

Let's Talk About Lipstick (Dark Ladies Editon)

I've threatened before to blog about lipsticks because I have such a hard time finding shades complimentary to my, um, deep shade of dark! I don't even want to think about the time I spend searching out foundation.

Next time, I will focus on foundation. For now, let's talk lipcolor.

Any woman who buys cosmetics know that prices aren't a great indication of quality. I've spent up to $20 for, say, lip color that was no better than the $2 and under selection at a beauty supply store. I think the main thing any of us want in our makeup is basic:

  • A complimentary shade - or at least one that doesn't indicate we should be wearing a rubber nose and comic shoes.
  • Something that sticks. To our lips or face and not to our teeth or clothing.
  • A decent price.
  • Availability.
I have the best luck finding good shades of lip and face color at those little neighborhood beauty supply stores. Unfortunately the neighborhood is usually in a zip code that requires I buy a plane ticket. The best blusher I ever found was in a shop right down the block from a niece of mine who lives in Arizona.

Online shopping is only an option for replenishing shades you've already tried. A shade that looks perfect on my computer screen is not always even close to what I get when USPS delivers the package.

Here are some of the lipsticks that I have used (or tried to).

The shades are:

 Black Radiance

 Chanel

 Pur Minerals

 Lorac (lipstick)

Lorac lipstick only
Lorac (gloss)

Lorac gloss only

Lorac lipstick and gloss

Maybelline

Revlon

Urban Decay

My fave!

See what I mean? All of those are great colors, but not all of them work with my skin hue. I lke to put on my liptick once I'm outside in whatever light there is. So far, my favorite is Urban Decay's "Shame". I like it for whatever time of day it is because it makes me feel fierce. Seriously, I just have a thing for very deep reds.

Though they look very similar by sight, Urban Decay's "Shame" is a much deeper red than the "Dominatrix" from Lorac. "Shame" is a deep color even when applied with the lightest touch. plus it stays on longer than any of the other shades. If I need to tone it down a bit, I can use just about any of the lighter glosses. (Too bad about the name of my fave shade!)

Because I just recently got the Urban Decay lipstick (and it's the first ever time I've tried a U. D. product), I will be checking that brand for other cosmetics. I like that it's great quality and will last me a while - cos I don't have to use so much to get an effect that lasts a long time.

Like I said, this post is just for lipstick (mostly because I got tired halfway through taking the photos!), but we'll get to foundations one day.

One last thing about the subject: In the case of lip color, you can sometimes tweak one shade by adding another shade or product. With foundation, that can be a disaster. You might get a better matching shade but usually you end up looking painted up rather than prettied up. I prefer wearing all-over color that looks and feels natural. If I didn't mind being plastered with goo, I could get a great look all the time.

Do other women struggle as much as I do with the whole makeup issue? I hope not. I mean, I've just written a whole blog post on the subject...
