Word (Of Thanks) To Your Mother - For Old Remedies (Updated 4/9/24)

Updated info will look like this.

When I started making and drinking onion tea, it worked so well that I decided to scour the web and my own memories for more mothers' remedies that might actually work. I was a little surprised that a lot of them have been attested to by medical pros. For some, there have been studies. At any rate, here is the list I came up with (and will be adding to).

As always, I remind you that I am not a medical or health professional of ANY kind. I am a blogger (barely). NEVER try any kind of health remedy you hear about online - not even from doctors - before consulting your own health care team. Use your common sense and do your own research.

Now, here's the list:

  • A tsp of baking soda in water once a day to help kidney disease. (A daily dose of sodium bicarbonate can help people whose kidneys can no longer remove enough acid from their blood. : I saw the tip here)
  • Celtic Sea Salt - for the mineral in it. A pinch in some morning water to get some of those minerals. (I just use it as a seasoning because I like the taste!)
  • Red Onion tea - for the antioxidants. (You also can add in some clove, garlic, and Ceylon cinnamon. Lemon for taste.) I blogged about this.
  • Honey-fermented garlic - garlic is good for health and so is raw honey. This is a more pleasant way to eat garlic. (I have done this. Delicious.)
  • At least 3 10-oz glasses of water a day. (I drink 3 16 oz bottles because I have try to stay hydrated.)

  • Saline rinses and nasal irrigation. There is something called a "Neti pot" made for this.
  • Cranberry juice (or tablets) for UTIs. I am not fond of the basic cranberry taste so I take the tablets.
  • Peppermint oil (diluted of course w/carrier for use on the skin!) rubbed onto the temples for headache relief. (20 or more years ago, a SIL of mine sold products from the luxury brand Borghese. They had a fancy version of this in a chapstick-type tube.)
  • Petroleum Jelly for the skin (and lips). Some folks use it like a lotion. I will use it as a home spa-type treatment - slathering it on and laying on a towel for an hour before gently rubbing most of the product off with a soft towel). Also can be used to treat dry feet - slather it on and relax in some soft, warm socks for the evening.) Finally, it can be used around the hairline to product your skin during a dye job.

  • Fennel for indigestion. It's said to chew a few pieces of seeds to relieve gas from the intestines.
  • Valerian for insomnia (I prefer a Magnesium oil topical water or a Magnesium citrate tablet).
  • Ginger for nausea. My mom would suggest ginger tea for pregnant ladies in our family. There is also candied ginger or crystallized ginger. I have used it for my medicine-induced nausea and it does work.

  • Arnica for muscle pain relief. I buy the gel.
  • Prunes or prune juice for constipation. Trust me. It works!
  • Witch hazel for hemorrhoids. I guess it cools and calms the area.
  • Duct tape for warts. Somehow it works.
  • Comfrey (applied topically as a cream) for back pain.
  • NEW - Linden honey for a multitude of potential benefits.
